Youth Teaching Youth
Over the past nine years VOCYL has been dedicated to teaching the youth through numerous youth leadership curriculums the importance of self-advocacy, rights and responsibilities and acquiring leadership skills that allow them to share the VOCYL message.
This school year, VOCYL has bumped it up a notch! In September youth discussed what it means to be a leader, what makes a good leader and how to become a better leader. They learned through this discussion the importance of becoming an involved learner and listener and additionally how learning to teach others can improve our leadership skills.
So throughout this year each youth in the VOCYL program, those with and without disabilities, will be teaching the group at one of our bi-weekly meetings. Each member will get to choose anything they want to teach and will share this interest or lesson with the others. In return, the learners, share their feedback and encouragement with the teachers.
Over the past two months we’ve leaned about Rememberance Day, Exotic Fruit and Meditation. It’s definitely been eye opening. We look forward to more great teaching and learning opportunities in the New Year!
