Community Recognition Award Winners Honoured
On May 20, 2015, we were pleased to present awards for the Employer of the Year, Educator of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, and Making a Difference.
Employer of the Year was presented to Marion Schubert, Store Manager, Winners Tillicum. Marion goes above and beyond to engage her team in inclusive employment. She has gotten to know two employees who are supported by CLV, and added extra hours to one person, and following a work experience, hired a second person we support! Presented by Liz Carr ( CLV Employment Services), Sabrina Anton (employee), and Robyn Appleton (employee).
Educator of the Year was presented to Rob House (Principal) and Tammy Reynard (Vice-Principal) of Spectrum Community School by the Schultz family. The attitude and leadership of the staff at Spectrum speak volumes about how inclusive and caring they are. Staff see the students for who they are and what they can do. As a result of the team approach, program flexibility and great leadership, Spectrum successfully educates and truly includes all students.
Making A Difference award was presented to Lee Dellabough, Occupational Therapist, by Lori Frank (CLV Family Support). Lee recognized a great need in the schools for supporting youth who are transitioning into adult services. Lee has made this a focus of her work along with a real commitment to learning all about transition and developing excellent working relationships with community resources including CLV. She works within the schools to help them find inclusive and creative ways for students to gain work experience and life skills they will need in the future. The families that she works with appreciate having Lee involved!
Our second Making a Difference award went to Chelsea Frenkel, a massage therapy student at West Coast College of Massage Therapy. Chelsea wanted to see how massage could help a child with physical and developmental disabilities. With patience and great skill over a few months, working with a young boy, Chelsea was able to improve the child’s mobility and balance and alleviate many aches and pains. Through the process, her instructors and her classmates also learned from the experiences she shared about the profound changes massage can make in a child’s life. This award was presented by Sherri Water Chief (CLV Program Manager of Youth Services), Joanne LaCroix, Campus Director, and Matthew Fleet, Instructor.
Our Volunteer of the Year award was presented to Janet Bavelas and her pet therapy dog, Amy, by the individuals and staff at the Supported Apartment Living (SAL) program. Janet and Amy (a large black Newfoundland dog) visit our SAL program twice a month. The two of them are supportive, caring and loving. Everyone looks forward to their visits -they make people feel happy!
